News: Britney Spears Musical "Once Upon a One More Time" set to Open in Washington DC

The Britney Spears jukebox musical “Once Upon a One More Time” is slated to appear at The Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington DC this fall. The production will run in Washington DC for a limited engagement from November 29 through January 2, 2022 as it eyes a spot on Broadway.

The musical was originally set to premier in Chicago in the fall of 2019 before being postponed to spring of 2020. However, after the COVID-19 shutdown, the producers canceled the Chicago run completely.

Directed and choreographed by Keone and Mari Madrid, “Once Upon a One More Time” features an original story written by Jon Hartmere that flips classic fairytales on their heads. According to Playbill, the plot features Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel, and their friends as they gather for their book club meeting. As they wish for a new story, a rogue fairy godmother grants their wish by dropping “The Feminine Mystique” in their laps. Mixed into the plot are pop hits from Spears, including “Oops I Did It Again,” “Lucky,” “Circus,” and “Toxic,” as it tells the story of a new kind of happily ever after.

Playbill also reports that the latest creative team will remain the same as the production prepares to open in DC, with creative consultant David Leveaux, scenic designer Anna Fleischle, costume and hair designer Loren Elstein, lighting designer Sonoyo Nishikawa, sound designer Andrew Keister, projection designer Sven Ortel, and wig designer Ashley Rae Callahan.

"I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs—especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore,” said Spears. “This is a dream come true for me!”

Casting has not yet been announced.
