News: "Mean Girls" Announces Permanent Broadway Closure
After playing 833 performances at the August Wilson Theatre, "Mean Girls" officially announced on January 7, 2021 that it will not resume performances once Broadway reopens (hopefully) later this year, according to the Mean Girls on Broadway official website. The production played it's final performance on March 11, 2020 and featured singer and former Disney Channel star Sabrina Carpenter in the lead role of Cady Heron. The final company also included Reneé Rapp as Regina George, Krystina Alabado as Gretchen Wieners, Laura Leigh Turner as Karen Smith, Olivia Kaufmann as Janis Sarkisian, Chad Burris as Damian Hubbard, Catherine Brunell as Mrs. Heron/Ms. Norbury/Mrs. George, Kyle Selig as Aaron Samuels, Cheech Manohar as Kevin Gnapoor and Baltimore native Rick Younger as Mr. Duvall, according the closure announcement from Playbill.
The musical, based on Tina Fey's 2004 comedy of the same name, is directed by Casey Nicholaw and features a book from Fey. The original production opened on Broadway on April 8, 2018 following a successful run at The National Theatre in Washington DC. The original production starred Erika Henningsen as Cady Heron, and leading the Plastics was Taylor Lourderman as queen bee Regina George, with Kate Rockwell as Karen Smith and Ashley Park as Gretchen Wieners.
As of now, the official tour is still scheduled to run as planned, although several dates are still pending due to postponements from the COVID-19 pandemic.
